Antimicrobial Activity of Extracts from Six Green Algae from Tanzania OceanDocs
Mtolera, M.S.P.; Semesi, A..
Many algae species have been shown to have bactericidal or bacteriostatic substances (Glombitza, I979;Michaneck, 1979; Caccamese et al., 1980; Fenical & Paul, 1984; Niang& Hung, 1984). The antibacterialagents found in the algae include amino acids, terpenoids, phlorotannins, acrylic acid, phenoliccompounds, steroids, halogenated ketones and alkanes, cyclic polysulphides and fatty acids. In a large numberof marine algae antimicrobial activities are attributed to the presence of acrylic acid.

Experimental infection of one-day-old chicks with Salmonella Serotypes Previously isolated from poultry facilities, wild birds, and swine Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sousa,E de; Werther,K; Berchieri Junior,A; Almeida,AM; Ardisson,FA; Silva,AC; Candioto,CG; Fernandes,SA.
In order to maintain the high production and export rates achieved by the Brazilian poultry industry, it is necessary to prevent and control certain disease agents, such as Salmonella spp. Using bacterial cultures, the aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in specimens collected from broiler facilities. Local wild birds were also sampled, as well as the feces of swine housed on the poultry farm. After sample collection, the isolated serotypes were subsequently inoculated into broiler chicks to determine their effects. Positive samples were collected from the following locations in the poultry facilities: poultry litter (S. serotype 4,5,12:R:-; S. Heidelberg; S. Infantis), broiler feces (S. Heidelberg; S. serotype...

Lagune de Salses-Leucate. II.- Contamination bactériologique et approche physico-chimique ArchiMer
Ladagnous, Helene; Le Bec, Claude.

Beucher, M; Plusquellec, A; Legal, Y; Cleret, J.
Sea water samples were collected in the vicinity of urban non-treated, urban treated and industrial outfalls. The samples belonged to two differents types: the first one consisted of the surface film, the second was the corresponding water at 50 cm depth. The enumeration of the bacteria in both types of samples indicated a significant concentration of the mesophilic flora and of the indicators of fecal pollution in the surface film. The value of the concentrating factor depended largely on the nature of the sewage and did not reflect differences between the various bacterial groups. At one of the stations a very significant regression was demonstrated between surface sample and depth sample.

Recherche et identification de bactéries pathogènes au sein d'une écloserie nurserie d'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, en relation avec la mortalité estivale du naissain ArchiMer
Waechter, Magali.
Summer mortality has been observed on oyster spat Crassostrea gigas since 1991 on french coasts. In our study, we deseribed symptoms observed during the mortality, especially adductor muscle weakness and we isolated strains on Zobell medium and TCBS from moribund spat. Strains isolated during a high mortality (60 %) were selected by experimental pathology on spat. Inoculation by bath led us to select a pathogenic strain (TNEMF6) for oyster spat. Phenotypic identification, phylogenetic study on 16S rDNA and quantitative DNA/DNA hybridisation showed that this strain belongs to Vibrio splendidus biovar II. Phenotyping and ribotyping with strains isolated during the study showed that only TNNIII7 and TNMB5 are similar to the pathogenic strain TNEMF6....

The evaluation of bacteriology in perianal abscesses of 81 adult patients BJID
Ulug,Mehmet; Gedik,Ercan; Girgin,Sadullah; Celen,Mustafa Kemal; Ayaz,Celal.
OBJECTIVE: Treatment of perianal abscesses requires prompt surgical drainage and antimicrobial therapy. However, we should encourage the selective use of antimicrobial agents on a case-by-case basis, especially because there is no evidence that uncomplicated perianal abscesses can be safely treated only with drainage. For this reason, it is important to identify the causative organisms; therefore, we accessed the microbiological analysis of these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 81 consecutive adult patients with perianal abscesses, who presented at a university hospital in Diyarbakir from January 2004 to December 2006, were included. Clinical and laboratory data, and results of microbiological analysis were recorded. RESULTS: All specimens,...

Vibriosis in bivalves : review of recent molecular, biochemical, and physiological studies ArchiMer
Paillard, Christine; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Le Chevalier, Patrick; Lambert, Christophe; Le Boulay, Christine; Berthe, Franck; Haras, Dominique.
The emergence of new vibriosis in the European Atlantic coasts has been associated with mass mortalities of molluscs causing important economic losses. For examples, Vibrio carchariae, a bacteria already isolated from shark, has been associated with a severe Haliotis epizooty in hatchery. In oysters, Crass()strea gigas, a strain closely related to Vibrio splendidus is suspected to be associated with summer mortalities.
